Stonewalk Field Notes for Harvard Divinity School

You can go here to read an essay I wrote as part of my field education report for Harvard Divinity School in 1999 about my participation in "Stonewalk." Stonewalk was a project of the interfaith retreat/activist center called The Peace Abbey, which is in Sherborn, Massachusetts. Go here to visit their website. Here is the website for Stonewalk. It consisted of a 34 day, 500 mile peace walk from Sherborn to Washington, D.C. in which a memorial stone for "unknown civilians killed in war" was pulled by human power alone along the entire route. People from over 50 towns and cities were recruited along the way to join the walk, including many veterans, and along the way myself and other "core members" raised awareness about the civilian death tolls in wartime and non-violent alternatives to war. In 2000, we took the memorial stone to Ireland for a 250 mile peace walk, and in 2002 did another 250 miles in England. A documentary was made about Stonewalk 1999 that aired on PBS, and here is the website dedicated to the film.
